Stone Path Malt seeks license to sell cans of beer

Mar 10, 2020

Stone Path Malt, located at 11 Kendrick Rd., processes malt that is used by 78 brewers to brew beer. Stone Path has a rotating selection of beers created with its malt on tap, and is hoping to be allowed to sell that beer for customers to take home, too.

Stone Path Malt co-founder Mark St. Jean said that customers frequently ask to buy the beer they’ve been drinking at the taproom, which often isn’t available in local package stores.

However, the company is not allowed to sell beer to be consumed off-site under its current license which was approved by the State Legislature.

For that license to be modified, Town Meeting would first need to approve a petition to the legislature for that change. Then, the legislature would write the law and vote on whether or not to approve it.

At their Tuesday night meeting, the Selectmen voted to put the petition on the warrant for the Special Town Meeting.

St. Jean said that selling cans of beer would benefit his company’s work to get people off the highway and into Wareham.

“We try to offer something in the taproom that you can’t get off the shelf every day in local package stores,” St. Jean said.

Because Stone Path Malt has an unusual relationship with brewers, St. Jean said that his company often has access to limited edition beers, such as collaborations between brewers, that are not widely available.
Town Meeting is scheduled for April 27.
