From Stevie B's to Bebo's: A community institution changes hands

Dec 18, 2023

A few things have changed as Stevie B's Sports Bar becomes Bebo's Bar and Grill.

The Irish license plates on the walls have left. An expanded food menu has come in, including bar pizzas, burgers and more.

What hasn't changed is the spirit of Stevie B's, said Bebo's owner Brant Boyington.

"The history of this place is that they've done a lot of fundraising through here for the community," said Boyington, speaking at a holiday party held Saturday, Dec. 16 to commemorate Bebo's grand opening. "And that's important — I want to do that as well."

Stevie B's, owned by proprietor Steve Beranger, operated at 270 Onset Avenue for 20 years. Beranger retired and closed the business in 2021, with the intention of putting the building and its liquor license up for sale as a package deal.

Boyington bought the building and brought Bebo's into the space earlier this year. While the business held its grand opening on Saturday, Dec. 16, it's been quietly open since the beginning of November.

So far, the community has been supportive, said Boyington.

"There's all different people in Onset — it's a growing community," he said. "There are the people that used to come here that are coming back. They're nostalgic; they see that there has been some changes to it, but it still has a lot of the old charm. And then there's people that have never been in here before that are giving us a try."

Members of the Iron Trinity Motorcycle Club showed up in force for the party.

The club has held a toy drive in the past with Stevie B's, and members said they came to the holiday party to support the evening's toy drive. A box set aside for toy donations was filled even before the party started in earnest.

Members of the club said they weren't sure yet whether the new place had the same spirit as the old, but were willing to find out.

Other community members came to the bar for the first time.

Seasonal resident Jim Welsh said he wasn't a regular at Stevie B's, but heard from a friend that Bebo's had good food, so came to check it out.

Beranger himself put in an appearance at the holiday party, giving away the last mementos of Stevie B's history.

When Beranger ran Stevie B's, he would visit Ireland from time to time for his family, and he would bring back license plates with his regulars' names on them. Those license plates decorated the walls of Stevie B's, and they came down when the place became Bebo's.

Beranger gave the license plates to their namesake regulars at the holiday party, in exchange for a donation to a charity. He said he raised $1,060 for Turning Point through the fundraiser.

"We did a lot of fundraisers to try and help people in the community, to help out children with cancer," said Beranger. "We did a lot of good things, and I think that Bebo's intention is to do the same thing."

He added, "I just hope the community will support them like [it] supported me."
