A homeowner and Wareham Police disrupted a break and entering on Saturday night.

According to a release, at about 10 p.m. on March 23, a caller reported to police that when they pulled into their driveway on Highland Court, they saw a man walking down the stairs leading to an apartment and carrying a large shopping bag. When the man saw the caller, he ran back up the stairs.

When Officers Jennifer Braley and Blaise Lalli got to the home, Braley saw the man’s sneakers at the top of the steps and ordered him to come down with his hands visible. Instead, the man went back into the apartment.

Then, Sergeant Herb Noble and Officer Michael Phinny arrived and the officers attempted to enter the apartment, but the man had locked the door and barricaded himself inside and refused to open the door.

Noble forced the door open and found the man hiding under a pool table.

The man had taken items worth more than $1,000 and put them in the shopping bag.

Michael D. Alfonso, 26, of Middleboro, is charged with break and entering in the nighttime with intent to commit a felony and larceny from a building. He is being held on $5,000 cash bail and is expected at Wareham District Court on Monday morning.
