Feb 22, 2021

The man found dead earlier today after entering the water of a frozen bog reservoir has been identified as Thomas Bartholomew, 44, of Wareham.

Bartholomew grew up in Marion and was the Chief Mechanical Officer for Cape Cod Central Railroad.

According to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s office, no foul play is suspected. The Chief Medical Examiner will determine the manner and cause of Bartholomew’s death.

Bartholomew willingly entered the water at the frozen-over bog reservoir at 786 County Rd. before 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 21.

According to officials, Bartholomew regularly swam in the frozen-over bog.

When he did not emerge, two other people, who were also at the bog, called 911.

Police arrived and crews from around the state and county searched the water until nearly midnight. The search resumed Monday morning, and Bartholomew’s body was located at about 12:30 p.m.
