Douglas R. Beaton, 82

EAST SANDWICH – Douglas R. Beaton, 82, of E. Sandwich, died Friday, January 3, 2025 at his home. He was the husband of Dianne L. (Winberg) Beaton.

Born in Middleboro, he was the son of the late Marjorie L. (Matthews) and Kenneth D. Beaton. Mr. Beaton graduated from Wareham High School, Class of 1961 and received in B.S. in business from the University of Rhode Island in 1965. A previous resident of Wareham, he moved to E. Sandwich in 1972.

Mr. Beaton was a local cranberry grower and served on the board of directors for Ocean Spray for 14 years. He was also president and owner of Eagle Holt Company, Inc. He was director and past president of Cape Cod Cranberry Growers Assoc., a member of the Mass. Farm Bureau, a 16-year trustee for Southcoast Hospitals Group, a 10-year trustee for Tobey Hospital, a 2-year trustee for Mass. Hospital Association and director and trustee for the Annie Maxim House in Rochester. In 2001, Mr. Beaton became one of the three owners of Edaville Railroad in Carver when it re-opened for operation. For the 38 years, he arranged guided tours of cranberry bogs for 3rd grade students in Sandwich.

Mr. Beaton also coached Sandwich Little League and Babe Ruth baseball and could always been seen at his grandchildren's sporting events, cheering them on. He also enjoyed Boston sports teams and spending time at "The Camp" in N. Chatham, NH. Mr. Beaton was also a member of the DeWitt Clinton Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Sandwich.

Survivors include his wife, Dianne of E. Sandwich; his children, Matthew W. Beaton and his wife Kelsy of E. Sandwich, Brett E. Prince of Buzzards Bay, Kelly A. Tuholski and her husband Brian of Plymouth, and Ashley C. Welch and her husband Chad of Rochester; his siblings, Peter Beaton of Lakeville and Christine DiRienzo of Sunapee, NH; 11 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, the late Anne E. Beaton.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025 at Chapman Funerals & Cremations – Wareham, 2599 Cranberry Hwy. (Rt. 28), from 4 – 7 PM. His funeral service will be held on Friday, Jan. 10, 2025 at the First Congregational Church, 11 Gibbs Ave., Wareham at 10 AM. Interment will follow in Agawam Cemetery, Wareham.
