Children's art builds international community at Wareham Free Library
After traveling the world for eight years, art pieces created by Ukrainian children have found their way to Wareham.
The art exhibit is currently hanging in the Wareham Free Library and is known as "Ideal House," Ukrainian children’s depictions of their perfect home. The exhibit is a part of the UNESCO project "Let's Build a Roof Over the World."
Children from around the world have taken part in the "Ideal House" project but the exhibit at the library is only drawings from Ukrainian children. The exhibit traveled through parts of Eastern Europe and Central Asia before reaching New England.
The project came to the Wareham Free Library through the New England based Fermata Arts Foundation. According to the Foundations website, the organization aims to promote communication between post Soviet states and Western nations through art.
Director of Children's Services for the Free Library Marcia Hickey explained she wanted to bring the exhibit in because the Free Library and the Fermata Arts Foundation both try to better the world through communication
"We help children with stories and listening and sharing and this is sharing the children's artwork," said Hickey.
Hickey added some of the drawings include houses made of candy and sweets, some are elaborate tree houses and many are the "science-fictiony type."
Hickey said she was surprised children in Ukraine depicted their ideal home in a similar way to American children.
"I expected the artwork to be more depressing but they are all very positive and forward looking visions of the ideal houses these children want to live in," said Hickey.
Hickey also sees this exhibit as a good learning opportunity for families in Wareham.
"I'd like [people] to see artwork from around the world," said Hickey. "I want parents to talk to their children about why this artwork is up and talk about these children from across the world where bad things are happening but these children still draw this beautiful positive thinking artwork."
The exhibit will be in Wareham until the end of November when it moves to the next library in Worcester.
