Boys soccer team works on ‘soccer IQ’

Wareham Boys Soccer team sustained its 12th defeat this season after facing Fairhaven on Monday and losing 0-4.

With only one victory against Bristol County Agricultural High School this season, the Vikings don’t lament over the missed opportunity to enter the tournaments. Instead, the team sees it as a chance to concentrate its energy on improving technical skills and “soccer IQ.”

“Our goal for the rest of the season is making sure that the kids are getting the most of what I am coaching them,” said Boys Soccer Coach Evan Wilga. “A lot of these kids are young and new to soccer, so they don’t know some of the tactics, but it is something that can be taught.”

With a team consisting of “about 70 percent” underclassmen, Wilga said that it’s only a matter of time until boys’ diligence and persistence pays off.

“We are a hard-working team, we never give up,” said Wilga. “We are playing a very tough conference, so it’s hard to see the results, but they are there.”

Perseverance is not the only team’s strength, according to one of the players, Bryan Gallagher. The strong bond between the boys encourages them to never give up.

“We are really close and friendly with each other. At the beginning of the season, it didn’t really show, but as the season has gone further, we have definitely gotten closer and improved on-field communication,” said Gallagher.
