Gatemen prepare for summer season
Jun 5, 2024

Players, pitchers and personnel of all descriptions are filtering in to Wareham for the start of the summer season for the Wareham Gatemen.

The Gatemen are a franchise member of the Cape Cod Baseball League, a developmental amateur league.

Gatemen President Glen Hannington said players have not fully made it to town yet, ahead of the team’s opening game on Saturday, June 15. He added that some players are still involved in college play.

The team will host a “meet-the-players” event on Thursday, June 13 at Stone Path Malt, 11 Kendrick Road, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Additionally, the organization is still looking for host families for the players. Host families provide players with the Gatemen with a “home away from home” throughout the season, and receive a stipend from the team.

The organization’s goal is to have 30 beds for its players, and it had 5 as of Thursday, May 30. Visit gatemen.org/host-families for more information.

The team is “looking forward to a lot of support from the community,” said Hannington.

While the team is also looking forward to the season of play, Hannington said the organization doesn’t discuss wins and losses. “It’s just a good feeling that we’re there to put on a nice show for everyone.”
