‘Golden Lane’ puts focus on Irish musical tradition in Wareham

Nov 3, 2018

Jigs, reels and other traditional Irish tunes got toes tapping in the Wareham Free Library on Nov. 3.

The Celtic group Golden Lane performed, encouraging the audience to clap, stomp and get into the spirit along with them. Bill Black, the group’s mandolin and banjo player, said the group encourages questions from the audience at shows. The idea, he said, is to keep Irish music alive.

“We make these performances because people may not know a lot about this type of music,” said Black.

Black said the group is named after a street in Dublin near where his wife grew up. Black’s wife, Pat, plays the bodhrán, a traditional Irish drum.  Black noted the music, though dating back hundreds of years, is still finding new audiences.

“This is a living tradition that dates back 300 to 400 years,” said Black. “We like to think we’re a part of that tradition.”
