Immersive Mahler on April 8, Open Rehearsal April 7

Apr 7, 2023

On Saturday, April 8, the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra presents Mahler’s Farewell at the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center. Under the direction of Music Director Yaniv Dinur, the orchestra will perform Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 9. On Friday, April 7, 3 - 5:30 PM, there is a free open rehearsal at the Zeiterion. Admission is free but donations will be gladly accepted at the door. Seating is general admission, enter and leave as you please. No tickets or RSVP required. (Please note that this is a working rehearsal, and pieces may not be played in their entirety. A 20-minute break usually occurs sometime between 4 and 4:30 pm.)

In this uniquely designed concert, Yaniv and our musicians will provide you with an “Immersive Mahler” experience. Mahler’s monumental final symphony, the ninth, is the only piece on the program and the first half of the concert will be used by Yaniv to explore and celebrate Mahler’s creative genius as expressed in this work. Yaniv will be your musical guide as the orchestra plays excerpts from the symphony while he explains what Mahler was up to in constructing the piece the way he did. In the second half, the full work will be performed. Yaniv stated, “I am so excited to have this opportunity to immerse the audience in a deep and moving experience of one of my favorite pieces of music.”

Mahler’s Farewell will take place on April 8, 7:30 p.m., at the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center in downtown New Bedford. Please note that there will be no pre-concert talk. Doors to the theater will open at 7 p.m. for the concert.

Tickets are $10-$65, with $5 student tickets (available at the box office only with student ID). Purchase tickets through the Z box office, 508-994-2900, or online at www.nbsymphony.org.
