Onset man pleads guilty in toddler overdose death

An Onset man, 34-year-old Donald Humes, pled guilty in Brockton Superior Court Tuesday, Jan. 20 to one count manslaughter and two counts of reckless endangerment of a child in the methadone overdose of his son, two-year-old Cameron Humes. 

Humes was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in the House of Corrections with one year to serve, followed by two years of probation. From probation and onward, Humes must remain drug and alcohol free with screenings.

Wareham Police received a 911 call from Humes April 24, 2022, stating that his son, Cameron, was unresponsive and not breathing. Wareham Police and emergency medical personnel responded to the home on Waban Avenue, located Cameron unresponsive and began performing life-saving procedures.

The toddler was transported to Tobey Hospital where he was pronounced dead. An investigation determined the manner of Cameron Humes’s death was acute methadone intoxication.

According to the Plymouth County District Attorney, further investigation from the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit found that Humes was the only adult at home at the time, and was responsible for supervising the children inside when he knew there was methadone in the house.
