Wareham Vikings win South Coast Conference championship title

The Wareham Vikings snatched the small division South Coast Conference championship title from the Old Rochester Bulldogs on Friday night in a game that had fans on the edge of their seats. The final score was 69-66.
“Every player was outstanding on the court tonight,” said Vikings Head Coach Steve Faniel. “We got a little deflated here and there, but overall we stuck with it. I couldn’t be any prouder of these kids.”
The two teams were neck and neck for most of the game with the Bulldogs leading the Vikings 37-34 at the end of the first half.
In the fourth quarter, Senior captain Taylor Carlson rallied alongside Destine Haywood-Gomes to get the Vikings back in the lead.
With less than three minutes remaining, they managed to tie the game and eventually secure a three point advantage.
Haywood-Gomes was the highest scoring player for the Vikings with 21 points. He had five 3-pointers. Carlson scored 19 points.
The Vikings had already bested Old Rochester twice this season and had a South Coast Conference record of 12-1 before Friday’s game. Old Rochester’s South Coast Conference record was 8-4.
“It was a great game,” said Faniel. “Everyone out there gave it their all.”
The Vikings will now go on to play a tournament with Apponequet before joining the state playoffs.
Their overall record for the season is 15-3 and their South Coast Conference Record is 13-1.
