Dozens of Wareham High School students were celebrated during the school’s awards ceremony on Thursday night, including one junior who was awarded a scholarship worth $40,000.

Junior Olivia Ellis was the student who was awarded the Steven A. Stone Scholarship, which is granted in a student’s junior year to encourage them to apply to college with the promise of financial aid.

“Assuming the Stone Scholar meets the qualifying criteria, this student will receive college tuition assistance of $10,000 in the freshman year, and be eligible for the same amount their sophomore, junior and senior years for a total of $40,000,” a school official said.

Ellis was one of many Wareham High School students to be recognized Thursday night for earning various scholarships and awards. A full list of those who were recognized is attached to this story above.

The Stone Scholarship was created by Stone’s family for Wareham High students to have the opportunity of higher education, the official said.

“Their intent was to encourage a student who, for reasons of family background or circumstance, might not have contemplated education beyond high school and for whom that opportunity would have a significant impact on the student and his or her family and community. The student should demonstrate character and integrity despite challenging circumstances, a sense of commitment to family, community, and society, possess a love of learning and show potential to benefit from a college education in a profound way.”
