After a school year full of covid-19 cancelations and compromises, Wareham High School students are making the most of the sunshine and warm weather as they shift some of their annual events outdoors.
On Thursday, May 13, Wareham High School’s second annual fashion show put students’ hard work on display. Wareham students and their friends took to the runway to display outfits they created or composed themselves.
“The purpose of this event is to show off what we’ve been learning from Ms. Cunha in our fashion marketing class as well as the business project class,” said senior Marissa Hathon, the fashion show’s director. “So we got together, and combined it with DECA, and planned the event as a whole.”
The event was the result of collaboration between the high school’s art department, Lisa Cunha’s fashion marketing and project management classes, and the DECA club. The DECA club aims to educate students who will become leaders or entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management by applying skills learned in the classroom to real-world business scenarios.
The show featured outfits in the following categories: seasons, sports, formal wear, streetwear, business casual, color/tones, wearable art, trendy, indie/boho and comfy casual.
Cunha said the wearable art category of the fashion show was one of her favorites. Hathon explained that students made the outfits.
“They either recycled old clothes and made them new or they made them out of recyclables,” Hathon said.
The other outfits were picked from the class and put together from what the students had, Hathon said.
The school’s first fashion show — held in January 2020 — was hosted inside the school’s auditorium. Cunha said doing the show outside came with “whole new challenges,” including a part of the red carpet blowing away just before showtime. But, despite the hurdles, the students persevered.
“For covid, they’ve done a great job,” Cunha said. “It’s funny to see them so excited to be out and doing things.”
