Wareham Girls Soccer sets big goals with a small team

The Wareham Girls Soccer team has set itself some lofty goals this season despite a smaller than average roster.

With six graduated seniors and two unexpected moves, the team is down to just 22 players. Among them are three eighth grade students, Ryann Tripp, Jacuelyn Stuart and Jocelyn DuPuis, who will be competing at the high school level for the first time.

“We're trying to secure a few more members, but I'm not too worried,” said Girls Soccer Coach Megan Kashner. "Across the board this team is pretty promising in terms of skill."

This season marks Kashner’s fourth year with the team which has had a rough reputation for losing in the past.

“During my first season we didn’t get a single win,” Kashner said. “But last year we got five. I'm hoping these girls can continue to turn the program around. They play hard, and I'm eager to add at least three more wins.”

Leading the team is Senior Captain Ryann McSherry, who Kashner describes as a force to be reckoned with.

“She’s one of the fastest girls on the field,” Kasher said. “She’s got a high I.Q. for soccer and she definitely leads by example.”

McSherry's personal goal for the season is to take Wareham to the state tournament.

"We'll need ten wins in the South Coast Conference to make it," McSherry said. "It'll be a lot of hard work, but it's also my last chance as a senior to play. I got really used to Wareham being the losing team and it's time for that to change."

Other students Kashner says to watch for include sophomore Emily Bird and sophomore Amanda Johnson.

“Bird is absolutely fearless on the field,” Kashner said. “And Johnson really knows how to change the flow of a game."

The team’s first game will be on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at home against Somerset Berkley Regional High School.

"We tend to struggle against the bigger South Coast teams," Kashner said. "But that doesn't mean we can't hold our own. These girls have really bought in and worked hard. I'm feeling optimistic for all of us."

The team will be open to adding new players until Wednesday, Sept. 5.
