Wareham’s Besse Park to reopen Dec. 27

Dec 26, 2018

Besse Park, located off Main Street near the Narrows Bridge, will reopen to the public on Thursday, Dec. 27, according to town officials.

The park, which includes a pier and picnic area, has been closed for almost a week. The parking lot is being used as a shuttle stop for customers buying recreational marijuana at Verilife, located across the street.

On Dec. 21, Verilife became the fourth store in the state to begin recreational marijuana sales. Large crowds and problems were reported at a store in central Massachusetts. In response, Verilife and Wareham officials worked together to put a traffic plan in place. The plan included having customers park at Water Wizz before being shuttled over to Verilife. The shuttle will be in place until the end of January. All customers must park at Water Wizz. Walk ups will not be served.

Town Administrator Derek Sullivan thanked residents for their understanding while the park was closed.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience while we utilized the park to see how the parking situation would go,” said Sullivan. “As always, we err on the side of public safety.”
