Volunteers pitch in to clear Wareham trails

Nov 4, 2018

Roughly 20 volunteers picked up rakes, loppers, brush cutters and weed whackers to clear trails on Sunday as part of a new program. The Wareham Land Trust and Buzzards Bay Coalition, a New Bedford-based nonprofit, have teamed up to bring some trail TLC at various properties in town.

Mead Binhammer, a Land Stewardship Coordinator with the Buzzards Bay Coalition, said the goal is to spruce up a different property once a month.

“We wanted to keep these trails open and easily accessible for the public to enjoy,” he said.

On Nov. 4, volunteers gathered with hand tools and a few gas-powered chainsaws and weed whackers to work on trails at the trust’s Tweedy and Barnes property, located at 230 Blackmore Pond Road. The 25-acre preserve features uplands, bogs and wetlands. Several trails offer views of the Sippican River.

Binhammer said additional trail days will be advertised about a month in advance on the land trust’s website. Land Trust members are aiming to clean up overgrown trails and also clear land following any storms to keep the properties open to walkers, said Binhammer.
