Former Lady Vikings showed the current crop of soccer players on Saturday afternoon that they haven’t lost a step.

In the school’s first alumnae game, past players stepped onto Spillane Field – some who haven’t laced up in more than a decade – and defeated the high schoolers 3-0.

The high school team’s Head Coach Megan Kashner said she had been bouncing around the idea for some time.

“I thought it would be a great way to bring together some people who hadn’t seen each other in a while and to show my players the game doesn’t have to stop after graduation,” said Kashner.

She put the call out online to former players and 28 people responded. Players from the Class of 1996 all the way up to this year’s graduating class participated.

On Saturday, Kashner, who graduated Wareham High School in 1999, took the field against her own players. Joining her was Mary Bruce, a current Selectmen who graduated in 1996. She didn’t think she’d back on the field.

“I haven’t played in ten years,” said Bruce. “I threw my cleats away! I had to buy all new equipment.”

Many of the former players said they still compete, either in indoor or women’s leagues. Kristen Wolcott, Class of 2004, was among them. Wolcott said with her team’s experience, the high schoolers didn’t stand a chance.

“We got ‘em,” she said.

Kelley Paling, Class of 2010, agreed.

“It’s a little intimidating, but I think we can hold our own out there,” said Paling.

Former players said in addition to competing, they enjoyed catching up with classmates.

“I haven’t seen some of these people in ten years,” said Mary Kate Dunphy, Class of 2009.

Dunphy was busy in the backfield throughout the game, providing stellar defense – despite wearing a leg brace.

“I’m just trying not to kill myself out there,” she said. “I’ve got work tomorrow.”

Lady Vikings current Captain Ryann McSherry said the game was a great experience, despite the loss.

“It’s probably a good thing they had more subs then we did, they were getting pretty tired,” she joked.

Hopefully, McSherry said, the game will be the first of many.

“I would love to come back after I graduate and participate,” she said. “This was such a great experience and I hope they keep doing it.”
