VFW opens doors to all for Christmas dinner

Dec 21, 2019

The Onset VFW was filled with classic Christmas music, the aromas of a home-cooked holiday meal and good cheer during its annual Christmas dinner on Saturday.

The dinner is open to all with a special invitation for seniors, veterans, and those in need, and includes a turkey dinner, clothing, and gift certificates for meals and groceries.

The annual event, held for the fifth time this year, is organized by Deneen Rose, who said that the event has grown as people spread the word.

“We are so pleased and so very proud that the community came together to make this event happen,” Rose said.

“This is the nicest thing I’ve been involved with in a long time,” said Sally Davis, a clinical psychiatric nurse who volunteered at the meal. “I’m delighted.”

DJ Lady K has provided music for the event every year. She suffered a stroke in April and had been staying in the Carolinas, but flew back up north earlier this week to DJ at the VFW’s Christmas Party and Saturday’s dinner. Although she only has the use of one hand, she spun classic Christmas hits that had people up and dancing.

“This is my love,” she said. “I never thought I’d be able to do it again. Never give up.”

People of all ages attended the dinner and helped out.

Patricia Schaaf, 86, was enjoying her dinner and being out and about despite having heart surgery only a day prior.

“She’s amazing, and I want her to be recognized,” said Schaaf’s caretaker, Marlene Gomes.

Eleven-year-old Jackson Dunphee has helped out every year by serving food and making sure people had drinks, and said he was having fun.

Rose noted that the VFW is always happy to accept donations for the dinner, including donations of clothing and other necessities.

Rose thanked the individuals and businesses who donated to the event, including McDonalds, Home Depot, the Gateway Tavern, and GAF Engineering, along with many individuals, including Anne Campbell, who donated Stop & Shop giftcards.
