Dreams do come true. Three former Wareham Gatemen baseball players, Andrew Vaughn, Bryson Stott and Ethan Small all heard their names called on Monday night during the first round of the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft.  

Vaughn, a first baseman in his junior year at Cal Berkeley and member of the 2018 Gatemen, was chosen third overall by the Chicago White Sox. While in Wareham, Vaughn showed the scouts what he was capable of, hitting for a .308 batting average with 5 home runs and 14 rbi’s in just 14 games before leaving to join Team USA.

Stott, a shortstop in his junior year at UNLV, also played a shortened season with the Gatemen in 2018 to join Team USA. He was chosen 14th overall by the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday. While in Wareham, he hit for a .275 average with 3 rbi’s and 2 doubles in only 12 games.  

Small, a pitcher in his senior year at Mississippi State University, was on the 2016 Gatemen team. Soon, he should be joining the Milwaukee Brewers after being chosen with their top pick, number 28 in the draft. In Wareham, Small pitched 20 innings over 7 games for an impressive 1.80 ERA and 11 strikeouts while earning 1 win and 1 save.
