Three displaced, two dogs killed in Wareham house fire

Nov 25, 2018

Authorities are investigating the cause of a fire that left two dogs dead and three people, including an 11-month-old child, displaced Saturday afternoon.

Crews responded to a call for a fire in a one-and-a-half story home at 5 Timeless Lane in East Wareham’s Shangri-la neighborhood at 12:11 p.m. Wareham Fire Capt. Chip DeBlois said no people were at the home when the fire started. However, two dogs were inside.

Colleen Geddis of Vermont, the mother of one of the homeowners, said one dog died at the scene. She said her son and his wife Diana attempted CPR and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. The other dog was taken to a veterinary hospital, but passed away Saturday night after spending the day in a coma, said Geddis.

“Our son, Craig, and his wife, Diana Geddis, are devastated over the loss of their beloved dogs, as are we all,” said Colleen.

DeBlois said the fire was ruled accidental and is being investigated.

“This was a mattress fire that started in a bedroom and caused extensive heat and smoke damage throughout the house,” said DeBlois.

Estimated damages are $25,000. Craig and Diana and one child living in the home are staying elsewhere for the time being.

DeBlois reported that three engines, one ladder truck and two other fire department vehicles responded with a total of 17 firefighters on the scene. He said the incident remains under investigation by the Wareham Fire Department.
