Superintendent: Classroom donation nixes need for borrowing $800,000

School officials will not have to borrow $800,000 to buy temporary classrooms at Decas Elementary School after receiving them nearly free of charge from a different district, according to Superintendent Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood.

In April, town meeting voters OK’d borrowing funds to purchase the classrooms, which would have housed displaced pre-school students in the wake of Minot Forest Elementary closing. That school was closed due to budget constraints and building issues. Shaver-Hood said officials received the portable classrooms from Westborough at no cost.

However, some money must be borrowed to move the classrooms, but only a fraction of the $800,000. Shaver-Hood said an estimate wasn’t yet available. Another change, said Shaver-Hood, was the fact the classrooms are no longer needed for pre-school students.

Decisions made by administrators allowed for all of the students to remain inside Decas classrooms. To do that, the portable classrooms will instead be used to house support staff.

“By moving offices and other service areas the building leadership was able to meet this goal and keep students in the existing building.,” said Shaver-Hood. “However, space is needed for support staff to operate from, hence the need for additional space.”
