Spring sports to start May 10

May 4, 2021

The spring season for Wareham High School softball, baseball and boys and girls track and tennis teams will begin on May 10. Wareham High School Principal Scott Palladino confirmed during the School Committee meeting on April 29 that all teams will have between five and nine games.

Additionally, he said, the number of games could increase if teams reach playoffs within the league. The regular season will wrap up on June 15, and playoffs will follow.

Palladino said coronavirus safety protocols will remain largely the same as they’ve been in previous seasons, including requirements that players wear masks at all times and bring their own water bottles.

Notably, however, the district plans to begin allowing two parents per athlete per game for both home and away teams.

“We’re really trying to tackle this progressively,” Palladino said, noting that the winter sports had no spectators and “Fall II” sports allowed only home team fans.

“Fall II” sports recap

Wareham High School’s “Fall II” sports season was a success, according to Palladino.

Wareham’s Fall II sports included football, cheerleading, soccer, field hockey, track or cross-country and volleyball. The unprecedented Fall II season was the result of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association’s decision to delay sports with a high-risk of covid transmission to a “Fall II” season that officially began on Feb. 22.

A few students were quarantined and one student tested positive for covid-19 during the season — but all were the result of exposures from outside of school. Palladino reported that “no games were lost” because a Wareham student tested positive for covid-19.

Palladino thanked Wareham Community Television for broadcasting the games for family members who couldn’t attend.

He also said athletes playing in the Fall II season did well academically, with an “overall GPA of 86.4,” which he said was “impressive.”
