Selectmen discuss safety precautions for town election

Jun 3, 2020

Ahead of the June 23 town election, officials are taking steps to make sure that voters and poll workers will be able to participate safely amidst the ongoing pandemic.

At Tuesday’s Board of Selectmen meeting, Chairman Patrick Tropeano announced a number of safety precautions.

There will be antibacterial wipes and microfiber cloths which will be used to clean voting booths and machines after each use. Voters will use a new pen to vote, which they will take with them when they leave.

Hand sanitizer will be available, and poll workers will be wearing gloves and masks. All voters and workers must wear masks within the precinct. Some masks will be available for voters who do not have one.

Only four voters will be allowed in each precinct at a time, and they must remain six feet apart while waiting to check in or leave.

Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

There is only one contested race on the ballot: Four candidates are running for two seats on the Board of Selectmen. The top two vote-getters will be elected. Incumbent Peter Teitelbaum is running alongside Jody Santagate, Judith Whiteside, and Ron Besse.

Incumbent Joyce Bacchiocchi and Kevin Brogioli are running for two seats on the School Committee.

Three positions will be open on the Board of Assessors. James McCahill and Priscilla Porter are running for reelection with three-year terms. David Heard did not swear in after last year’s election, so his seat will be open with a two-year term. David Halberstadt is running for that seat.

Donna Bronk and William Lockwood are both running for reelection on the Housing Authority with five-year terms.

Shelli Mibilia is running for election as a constable.

Commissioner Donna Bronk is running for reelection with a three-year term as a Sewer User Commissioner.

At-large Sewer Commissioner Malcolm White is running for reelection with a three-year term.

There is still time to register to vote in this election -- the deadline is June 12.

Precincts one and six vote at Town Hall, 54 Marion Road. Precincts two and three vote at the Ethel E. Hammond School, 13 Highland Ave. Precincts four and five vote at the Decas School, 760 Main St.
