Select Board gives School Committee key to the new school

The Wareham Elementary School is now open, and the Select Board commemorated that accomplishment with a proclamation and the handing of a symbolic key to the school from Select Board Chair Judith Whiteside to School Committee Chair Joyce Bacchiocchi.

Because the meeting was held virtually, Whiteside passed the key to Bacchiocchi through a “magic subterranean” tunnel — one Zoom window to another.

“Thank you very much and we hope that you enjoy it as much as we think you’re going to,” said Whiteside, who described the school as a “spectacular accomplishment for the town of Wareham.”

Bacchiocchi said that it was 1,162 days ago as of Jan. 11 that the voters approved the debt exclusion to fund the school, and added that a ribbon-cutting event to allow the public to see the new school is planned for the spring.

School Building Committee Geoff Swett thanked his committee members for using their time and expertise for the project, which was completed on time and under budget.

“It’s the Wareham team that gets these things done,” said Town Administrator Derek Sullivan.
