Schools to remain closed for the rest of the year

Apr 21, 2020
Wareham schools will be closed for the remainder of this school year.

Reacting to Gov. Charlie Baker's Tuesday afternoon order that all Massachusetts schools remain closed for the rest of this school year, Superintendent Kimberly Shaver-Hood said she knew teachers and students would be disappointed, but "we want to keep everyone safe and healthy.”

Now, teachers and the Educators’ Association are hard at work developing plans and lessons for the rest of the school year.

In coming days, the state will announce new guidance for schools detailing what curriculum schools are expected to cover during the rest of the year, and roughly where students should be when starting school in the fall.

“I know for many it’s very disappointing, but I certainly appreciate their flexibility and understanding and willingness to work with us,” Shaver-Hood said.

She urged parents and students who are struggling to reach out to their teachers and principals for support.

The announcement will also have non-academic impacts: The spring sports season has been cancelled.

“Our hearts just go out to our athletes and our seniors,” Shaver-Hood said. “This isn’t something we would have wanted to happen, and we’re doing everything we can to honor and celebrate their achievements.”

The eighth-grade trip to Washington, D.C., will be postponed again, tentatively to a date in the fall.
High School Principal Scott Palladino is working to come up with a way to honor seniors in lieu of a traditional graduation and prom.

Shaver-Hood invited those with suggestions to reach out to her office or email her at kshaver-hood@wareham.k12.ma.us.

The distribution of free breakfasts and lunches to anyone under the age of 18 will continue for the rest of the school year.
