Anthony Scarsciotti, first elected to the Board of Selectmen in 2016, is seeking another term on the Board. Scarsciotti was first introduced to town politics by his late wife, who served on the Finance Committee for over a decade.

A priority for Scarsciotti is bringing more traffic to Wareham’s downtown, which he said suffered after the Wareham Crossing development came to town.

“I’d like to see more traffic down there,” Scarsiotti said. “It’s just very difficult to get more traffic down there for those [business owners]. It’s not that they’re doing badly, they’re doing fine, but I’d like to see a little more traffic in the downtown area.”

Scarsciotti expressed a measured view of the town’s finances.

“We’re not really in tough shape but I’d like to see us do a little better,” Scarsciotti. “I don’t want to see people’s taxes go up or anything like that.”

Scarsciotti said he’d like to look at how the town can bring in more money without “hurting people in the community.”

He said he’d like to see the Tremont Nail Factory used for private events like weddings as well as events for the town.

“It’s a nice place,” Scarsciotti said. “It’s in a decent spot. Parking’s not all that bad. I think it can be better utilized.”

Scarsciotti said that a new police station is a high priority, especially because of how much highway there is in Wareham.

“I think they do a nice job and I’d like to see them get some more resources and a new station,” Scarsciotti said.

He said that putting the fire department and police department would be a good idea and could save the town money over time. Scarsciotti said that the land extending behind the current police station could be a good place for the new facility as it is close to the highway and downtown.

“I have my concerns as to the type of people it brings into the town,” Scarsciotti said of the burgeoning marijuana industry.

Scarsciotti said he is invested in making sure students get a good education.

“These are gonna be our future selectmen,” he said.
