Wareham police officers responded to a report of a person in the water in distress on Sunday, Dec. 27, according to a department press release.

Officers James White and Jon Verhaegen went to a beach location in Wareham and found the person in neck-deep water. The officers entered the water in their uniforms and helped the person back to shore, according to the press release.

The individual was transported to Tobey Hospital for treatment, according to police. Neither officer was injured during the incident. Members of the Wareham Department of Natural Resources responded with a boat to the area and helped police during the incident.

“The officers put their own safety aside to assist someone who needed help,” said Police Chief John Walcek. “They did a great job, and I am very proud of them.”
