Some Wareham High School students were resting easy after another successful mattress sale fundraiser on Oct. 20.

The third annual event featured 29 different mattresses, set up showroom-style, inside the Wareham High School gymnasium as well as eight different luxury pillows. The mattresses were available in all sizes, with prices ranging from $150 to $1,500. The Mattresses sold for between 30 to 50 percent off retail price with proceeds benefiting students high school’s in the Distributive Education Clubs of America program.

The club is a vocationally-oriented sales and marketing program for high school students, who take several classes in marketing, promotion, sales and financial literacy.

The mattress sale will help to pay for travel costs and expenses for students going to a national competition, where students compete in different business disciplines giving case studies, performing mock interviews and taking written exams. To get to nationals, students must perform well enough against students from other schools at the district and state level.

Club Advisor Lisa Cunha said the sale netted the club $4,400 in its first year and $8,500 in the second year. She was hopeful this year’s sale would match or exceed last year’s sale.

In front of Viking Drive and other places in town students held signs and some wore mattress costumes to attract customers. Among them was club Vice President Julie Anne Matthews. She said she was grateful for support from residents.

“We appreciate everyone coming out today to help us out,” she said. “This goes a long way to making the club a success.”
