Labor poster exhibition coming to Wareham Free Library

Jun 21, 2021

The Wareham Free Library will be hosting “Art for a Cause,” an exhibition of international labor posters from the collection of Stephen Lewis, from July 2 through July 30.

Roughly 25 posters will be on display. The posters address issues including the Spanish Civil War, anti-fascism, independence, and censorship, among others.

Lewis said the exhibit is “a bit of art, a bit of message, and a bit of history.”

Lewis, a retired trade union activist, has a collection of thousands of such posters which have been displayed in libraries and state heritage parks.

“I collect posters which reflect some of my ideals,” Lewis said. “They include

trade unionism, peace, women’s equality, acceptance of diversity, protecting the

environment, and anti-imperialism.”

The exhibition is supported by a grant from the Wareham Cultural Council and donations from Laborers Local 1249 and Asbestos Workers Local 6.

The library is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
