Herbert J. Barrett, 88, of Wareham, died Wednesday, Oct. 3 at his home following a period of declining health. He was the loving husband of Arlene J. (Borsari) Barrett.

Born in Wareham, he was the son of the late Cecil and Emily (Boland) Barrett. He graduated from Wareham High School, Class of 1948, serving as class president.

Barrett served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War stationed in Minnesota and Alaska. While in the service, Herbert attended Air Police Training School. Following his military service, he attended Boston University and was employed for a short time as a surveyor and a special police officer. Barrett joined the Wareham Police Department in 1955 and attended the Massachusetts Police Academy, serving as class president. He was a highly respected police officer and he proudly served the community for many years. He was Acting Chief from 1978 to 1979 and retired in 1994 as Detective Sergeant.

Barrett enjoyed boating and fishing in the waters of Onset and Buzzards Bay as well as snorkeling in Aruba. He was a dog lover, voracious reader and a lifelong Boston sports fan. Above all, he enjoyed his home and family.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene J. Barrett; his son, Jeffrey Barrett and his wife, Maureen of Marion; his daughter, Maureen J. Barrett of Wareham; his grandchildren, Jeffrey D. Barrett, Andrew J. Barrett, Stephanie M. Barrett, Bryan B. Teefy, and Matthew K. Teefy; his great-granddaughter, Alia Stephanie Teefy; his brothers and sisters in law, Kenneth and Diana Borsari, and Alan and Susan Borsari; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank and recognize his dedicated caregivers, Natalia Ciriello and Dee Galvin and special attendants, Hector DeJesus and Chris Lawton.

His funeral will be Monday, Oct. 8, 2018 from the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Rt. 28), Wareham at 9 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Anthony’s Church, 22 Barstow St., Mattapoisett at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Wareham. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m.
