Glendora Vazquez, 77

Glendora Evelyn (Carter) Vazquez, 77, of Wareham, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2019 at home, surrounded by her loved ones after battling Parkinson’s for over 15 years. Lovingly known by her friends and family as Dory, she was born on July 24, 1941 in Bridgeton, New Jersey, the daughter of the late James and Serena Carter.

Dory is survived by her loving husband of 36 years, George William Vazquez. After meeting at the 1983 Garden State Academy Camp Meeting in Tranquility, New Jersey, they were married one year later in the same location on June 24, 1984.

Dory was a proud veteran of the United States Women’s Army Corp, serving from 1961 until 1963, when she was honorably discharged after having her firstborn.

When Dory was seventeen years old, she attended an evangelistic meeting, giving her heart to God and joining the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. She was a spiritual leader for her family and dedicated many years to service, including leading Pathfinders and was Girls’ Director at Garden State Academy Camp and Retreat Center. She enjoyed collecting American coins, voraciously reading Louis L’Amour, and shopping for her grandchildren.

Dory is survived by her children Dean Henry Pierce and his fiancé, Crystal Snider, Dawn Serena Lairson and Samuel Esmo Lairson III, Dorry Ina Zetterstrom and her husband, Todd Edward Zetterstrom. She was the loving “Nana” of grandchildren Christine Ashley Diaz and her husband, Hery Efrain Diaz, Kirk James Pierce, and Gabriella Amber Lairson. She is also survived by her siblings, Betty Lou Bracken, Maryann Davis, James Carter and his wife, Darlene Carter along with her nieces and nephews, Michael Bracken, Rick Pierce and his family, Shannon Carter and her son, and Serena Sinclair and her son.

The funeral service with military honors will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 10 a.m. at Wareham Village Funeral Home, 5 Center Street, Wareham, MA 02571. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.
