Gateway Youth Hockey team wins Southern New England Hockey Conference League Championship

On Sunday, Gateway Youth Hockey’s midget team earned a Southern New England Hockey Conference League Championship title with a 4-3 victory over the previously undefeated Panthers.

The Panthers handed the Gladiators the team’s only loss earlier in the season. The Gladiators scored early in the game when Zack Lovendale found the back of the net.

The Panthers then scored, but the Gladiators had answer. Tyler Lovendale found the back of the net twice, assisted by Jack Byrnes on the first shot and Quirino doCanto on the second one. The Panthers then scored, pulling back to within a goal, until late in the final period, when doCanto beat the Panthers goalie for the game winning shot. Assisting on the goal were Ty Lovendale and Tryggve Krogstad.

The Panthers added another goal, with a little over a minute left in the game, but the Gladiators held off a late barrage of shots, to hang on for the championship. Both Gladiators’ goalies, Alex DeMarco and Steven Strachan III, played outstanding in the win. On the season, the Gladiators finished with 15 wins and one loss.

Some statistics for the season include: Quirino doCanto (20 goals, 21 assists), Tyler Lovendale (17 goals, 13 assists) Noah Reardon (13 goals, 17 assists), Tryggve Krogstad (3 goals, 12 assists), Zack Lovendale (11 goals, 3 assists), Bryan Gallagher (7  goals, 6 assists), Peter Pimental (7 goals, 6 assists), and Coleby Paling (2 goals, 9 assists). Other players contributing with goals and assists during the season were defensemen Seth Tomasik, Matt Youlden, and Noah DeMoranville. While the forwards who contributed were Zach Barris, Jack Martins, Jackson St. Don, Jack Byrnes, and Ethan Carpentier. On the season Alex DeMarco had 1.61 goals against average, while Steven Strachan III had a solid 2.72 goals against average.
