The Wareham Garden Club is stepping up its community service this summer with “Weeding Wednesdays.”

Each week, members gather around town, decked out in bright yellow safety vests and armed with rakes, pruners, trimmers, shovels, and brooms, to spruce up public spaces. The club members always wear masks and gloves and stay socially distanced while working together. 

Locations cared for by the Garden Club include the lighthouse gates, container gardens on Main Street and in Pezzoli Square, the traffic islands at Onset and Minot Avenues, Minot Memorial Park, and memorial gardens at the Post Office and Indian Neck Road and Oak Street.

Recently, they’ve expanded their territory to include places like the weekend train platform, the Wareham Free Library, Fearing Tavern, the Veteran’s Memorial by Town Hall, and the Police Station.

Wareham’s Municipal Maintenance crews have pitched in by collecting hundreds of bags of trash, cuttings, and piles of brush.

The club’s plantings are purchased through support from club fundraisers and donations from citizens and local businesses, including AD Makepeace. The club is also supported by discounts given at Nessralla’s Farm, Crystal Lake Nurseries in Carver, and Eden’s in Marion.
