French teacher plans Canada trip for students

Feb 27, 2020

Wareham High School French Teacher Elena Mytarkina met with the Wareham School Committee during a meeting on Thursday, Feb. 27, to present her plan for a student trip to Québec in June, 2021.

Mytarkina’s plans are for a trip of three days, and two nights, and include a variety of educational opportunities. If the trip happens as planned, it will be sponsored by Forum Language Experience.

According to her itinerary, students will spend the first day of the trip taking a guided tour of Old Québec, where they will be able to visit the oldest shopping district in North America. At night, they will participate in an interactive workshop that will teach them about the soldiers who fought in battles during the Seven Years’ War.

On the second day, students will watch a demonstration at the Copper Museum, and listen to traditional musicians. On the third day, students will be treated to a traditional breakfast of croissants, and hot chocolate, and then learn about how prisoners were treated in the 1800s from a Morrin Cultural Center guide.

Mytarkina explained that prices will depend on how many students sign up for the trip. If 20 students participate, the cost would be $750, per student, but if more than 40 students go on the trip, they would pay $610 each.

The price would include transportation, and meals. Mytarkina said that she understands that this is a lot of money for high school students, and said that students could pay in monthly installments. She also suggested holding a French bake sale to help fundraise for the trip, and explained that she set the date for 2021 to give time for students to prepare for the trip.

School Committee Vice-Chair Apryl Rossi asked how the students would travel to Québec, to which Mytarkina responded “a very fancy bus” would take them there and back, and also provide transportation during their stay in Canada.

The committee voted unanimously to support Mytarkina’s trip, and wished her good luck going forward with her plans.
