Former town accountant indicted for embezzlement in three other towns

Justin Cole, who briefly served as the Wareham town accountant along with his firm, has been indicted for embezzling more than $729,000 from Uxbridge, Monterey, and Millville.

The embezzlement allegedly occurred between December 2012 and June 2018 -- beginning six months after Cole left Wareham.

Cole was the head of the Baystate Municipal Accounting Group, which was hired by the town on an interim basis in November 2011 after the town twice failed to attract a suitable applicant to serve as Town Accountant.

Cole’s firm continued in that role until June 30, 2012.

In 2013, the town hired Powers & Sullivan -- an independent auditor -- to review the books from fiscal year 2012, which encompassed the period when Cole worked for the town.

Although the report found some issues with the town’s procedures, the overall audit was clean.

Town Administrator Derek Sullivan said that Wareham has not been contacted by investigators from the Attorney General’s Office, but that he would offer any assistance requested.
