Red Sox reliever Matt Barnes celebrated a World Series win on Sunday, eight years after his days on the Wareham Gatemen. 

Barnes pitched for the Gatemen from 2009 to 2010. The team is part of the Cape Cod Baseball League, one of the premier amateur leagues in the country that attracts top college talent every summer.

The Red Sox defeated the Dodgers four games to one for the team’s fourth world championship in 14 years.

The Danbury, Connecticut native allowed just two hits with no runs over 2.1 innings. He earned the win in Game 1 when the Sox defeated the Dodgers 8-4.

In the postseason, Barnes appeared in 10 games with a 1.04 ERA. He was drafted by the Red Sox in 2011. During his summers with the Gatemen, Barnes and teammate, last year’s World Series MVP George Springer, stayed with Bob and Jane Gleason.

Springer and Barnes, both University of Connecticut alums, had excellent seasons with the Gatemen. Gleason jokingly refferred to them as a “married couple.”

“They bickered a lot, but in a good-natured way,” said Gleason. “They were both young kids who were really fun to have around.”
