Flying high with Great Shearwaters in Wareham

Where’s WarehamMS?
Sep 12, 2018

Wareham Week readers are invited to follow along with Wareham Middle School students this year as they track a Great Shearwater bird dubbed “WarehamMS” across the Atlantic Ocean.

Weekly maps of the bird’s movements will be posted online for the life of the project accompanied with a description of the animal’s flight pattern.

The project takes off as collaboration among Stellwagen National Marine Sanctuary Research Coordinator David Wiley and Wareham Middle School teachers Jeff Eggers and Kristin Kelly.

A satellite tag on the back of WarehamMS updates with the bird’s location 15 to 20 times a day as it migrates from Cape Cod all the way to Tristan da Cunha in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean.

Last week WarehamMS moved from the Great South Channel to the Nantucket Shoals before heading north to Platts Basin off the coast of southern Maine. This week the bird has kept to relatively deep water in the northern Gulf of Maine near the Jordan Basin.
