Elks donate gifts to Toys for Tots

Dec 23, 2019

The Wareham-New Bedford Lodge of Elks donated a mountain of toys to Toys for Tots with the help of the State Police.

Led by Jonie Hackett, the Elks raised $2,200 by buying tiny stockings and hats for St. Patrick’s Day to support the effort.

The club has been donating to Toys for Tots for at least six years, and used to contribute a check before switching to buying toys.

Hackett and fellow Elk Scooby took the donated funds and went on a toy-shopping spree for the cause, loading up carts with basketballs, stuffed animals, remote-control cars, and other gifts for kids.

The Elks were also helped by the Robert Villanueva family, who threw their Christmas party at the lodge and asked each guest to bring a gift to donate.

The State Police came by the lodge on Dec. 19 to load the toys into their cruisers and bring them to a nearby Toys for Tots distribution center, which will make sure the toys are under families’ trees by Christmas morning.
