There are now 78 cases of coronavirus in Wareham, according to data released Wednesday by the state.

Of those cases, more than thirty are residents or staff at the Tremont Rehabilitation and Skilled Care Center.

The total number of cases in town has more than doubled since April 14, when the state reported 34 cases.

Tobey Hospital is currently treating 8 coronavirus patients, two of whom are being treated in the intensive care unit.

Officials have urged the public to continue to vigilantly follow social distancing guidelines, as the disease’s impact could still get worse.

“Our ICU and critical care volume is starting to spike, which is why we’re in the process of adding nearly 500 beds to Southcoast’s service area by the end of this month,” said Shawn Badgley, public information officer for Southcoast Health. “Throughout this pandemic, our region’s cases have lagged a bit behind Boston’s curve, so it’s quite possible the worst is yet to come. This is no time to let your guard down.” 

All American Assisted Living has had one resident and one staff member test positive, and will be testing all 20 residents of the memory care unit, in which the coronavirus-positive patient lives.

Wareham Healthcare, formerly called Forestview, reported having no cases on April 15 and were not listed by the state on April 22. The facility has not responded to multiple requests for comment.
