The Pinehurst Beach Improvement Association (PBIA) hosted it’s second annual art show on Saturday, Sept. 8 at the community house on 114 Pinehurst drive.

The event showcased works in both watercolor and acrylic from local artists as well several raffles.

Organized by PBIA member Charlene Mackiewicz, the art show serves as a fundraiser which helps to protect and preserve beaches in the Pinehurst neighborhood. Last year the show raised $700 towards the construction of a sea wall which helped to preserve the neighborhood’s eroding coastline.

“Living near the water can be awesome,” Mackiewicz said. “But it’s also very challenging.”

According to Mackiewicz, 20 percent of all art sales from this year’s show will go towards the construction of a groyne on Pinehurst beach. Similar in appearance to a stone jetty, the groyne would help to reduce further run off along the beach by restricting water flow.

“We’ve been very successful with our fundraisers in the past, so we’re hopeful about this project,” Mackiewicz said. “The construction of the sea wall was covered entirely by donations.”

Outside of the art show, the PBIA host numerous other community building events such as cookouts and kid-centric activity nights.

“The art show is one of the more cultural events that we do,” Mackiewicz said. “And I’d love to see it stick around. It’s nice for us to get together and appreciate our local artists.”

The following artist took home first, second and third place prizes at the art show respectively: Sarah Brown of Marion, Nat Simkins of Wareham and June Strunk of Wareham.
