Yaniv Plays Brahms on October 29

Oct 27, 2022

On Saturday, October 29, the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra will present Yaniv Plays Brahms at the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center.

For this concert, NBSO Music Director Yaniv Dinur moves from the podium to the keyboard to perform Johannes Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1. He will pass the baton to guest conductor Oriol Sans, who will lead the orchestra in the evening's three selections.

Mr. Sans is director of orchestral activities and assistant professor of conducting at the University of Wisconsin’s Mead Witter School of Music in Madison. He is music director and conductor of the University of Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra and the University Opera as well as the Detroit Symphony Youth Orchestra.

Among others, Mr. Sans has conducted the Detroit Symphony, the Santa Fe Symphony, the Michigan Chamber Winds and Strings, the New Mexico Philharmonic, and the San Juan Symphony.

The first half of the concert will feature Respighi’s gorgeous tone poem, Fountains of Rome, and the exhilarating Transcend by Chinese-American composer Zhou Tian. Transcend evokes the story of the many thousands of Chinese immigrants who toiled alongside others in the dangerous work of building the transcontinental railroad that linked the United States in 1869.

The program’s second half will showcase Mr. Dinur’s artistry as a soloist when he joins the NBSO in performing Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1. In addition to its scale and grandeur, this masterpiece is noteworthy for the thrilling technical difficulties it presents, creating an ideal opportunity for NBSO patrons to appreciate another facet of the maestro’s talents.

Yaniv Plays Brahms will take place on October 29, 7:30 p.m., at the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center in downtown New Bedford. Please join Maestro Dinur and Mr. Sans for the pre-concert talk in the theater at 6:30 p.m. Doors to the theater will open at 6 p.m. for the talk and 7 p.m. for the concert.

Tickets are $10-$65, with $5 student tickets (available at the box office only with student ID). Purchase tickets through the Z box office, 508-994-2900, or online at www.nbsymphony.org. Convenient concert parking is available in the Z garage for a $4 cash fee and free parking is available on the streets surrounding the theatre.
