Peaches (Prunus persica) are edible fruits that were introduced to North America from China and East Asia. Peach trees can grow to be 15 to 25 feet tall, and their branches can grow to be a similar width. In April, the trees bloom with white to deep red flowers. The fruit matures and is ready to pick in late July and August. Peaches are a sweet fruit, and they can be used to make cobbler, ice cream, salsa, and various drinks. (Note: The seed inside a peach, also known as the pit, contains high levels of hydrogen cyanide, which is a poisonous chemical. Do not consume the peach pit.)

Farmers work very hard to ensure that trees in the peach orchard have the proper conditions to optimize growth. Peach picking is a great way to appreciate the work put into the crops by farmers and migrant workers and enjoy the wonderful summer weather.

To participate in this late summer activity, visit a local peach orchard to pick some peaches for a sweet treat!

You can also visit your local farmers market to purchase some fresh peaches!
