As the weather gets nicer, more people will be looking for a reason to get outside. Why not try fishing? It’s simple, relaxing, and requires minimal equipment.

Some common freshwater fish species you might catch include bass and yellow perch. Adult largemouth bass feed on fish and frogs, and they are stocked throughout the U.S. for recreational fishing due to their high popularity. Yellow perch spawn between February and July, when they release large numbers of eggs to combat low juvenile survival rates.

Atlantic striped bass and Atlantic spiny dogfish are common marine fish species that you might catch while fishing. The Atlantic striped bass is known for dark horizontal lines along the length of its body, and the species is at risk of overfishing. The Atlantic spiny dogfish is a shark species known to be opportunistic feeders, meaning that they prey on species that are most available to them.

If you are 15 years or older, you must have a valid fishing license with you while fishing. Be sure to check out Massachusetts' fishing rules and regulations before casting your line.
